Why Krümelmap Exists
A dad from Berlin was tired of having to search through a dozen websites for every outing. Now everything is on one map.
Auf der Karte ansehenIt all started one Friday evening. The kids were in bed, the weekend was just around the corner, and the question that arises anew every week in every household with children: What are we actually going to do tomorrow?
So the search began. I opened the district website and scrolled through the events calendar. The family center’s Instagram account. The PDF file with the vacation program that someone uploaded in 2019. Three parenting blogs, two of which hadn’t been updated in months. A Facebook group with 400 posts and no search function. After forty minutes, I knew: There’s a crafts afternoon in Neukölln. Great—except I don’t live in Neukölln, and you don’t drive all the way across town for that with a four-year-old.
The real problem was never the selection
Berlin has an incredible amount to offer for kids. Children’s theater, hands-on museums, workshops, farms, swimming pools, festivals in every other backyard. The problem is that it’s all scattered everywhere and doesn’t come together in one place.
What was completely missing was the simplest of all questions: What’s nearby, and is it suitable for my child’s age? No calendar answers that. That’s why Krümelmap became a map instead of a list.
What you’ll find here
Events for kids in Berlin, day trip destinations, and permanent venues—all on one map, filtered by neighborhood, age, price, and whether you’re indoors or outdoors. You zoom in on your district on the map and see what’s within walking distance. Done.
The age ranges aren’t just for show. Each entry specifies the age range it’s actually suitable for— because “for kids” means something completely different for a two-year-old than for a ten-year-old, and because nothing is more frustrating than driving an hour to an exhibition that’s still too abstract for your child.
Who’s Behind It
Krümelmap is run by Jens Buthut from Köpenick—a father of one and a full-time web developer in Berlin. No publisher, no editorial team, no investor. That explains both: why the site looks the way it does, and why it exists at all.
How the listings get here
Some come directly from the organizers themselves; others are researched and verified by me. What’s listed on the map has been reviewed by someone—you won’t find any automatically collected data here that hasn’t been checked.
Still: Berlin is big, and opening hours change. If you notice something that isn’t right, write to me. And if you know of an event that’s missing here, all the more reason—the map thrives on that.
What Krümelmap Is Not
Not a paid ranking. If you want to appear higher on the list, you can’t buy your way up—entries are sorted by distance and date, not by budget. If that ever changes, it will be noted here and indicated in the relevant entries.
